What's New at Community Action

Newman's Own Foundation gives to Meals on Wheels

Thank you to Newman's Own Foundation for their generous support of the Meals on Wheels program. The $9,000 grant will help to buy over 2,900 meals for our homebound elderly and disabled clients living on low incomes.
Paul Newman started Newman's Own in 1982 with his personal recipe salad dressing, which he bottled and sold, and then he gave 100% of the profits to charity.  Paul Newman gave back because, he said, "It's just the right thing to do."  He supported thousands of worthy causes, but made clear that you don't need to have a lot of money or be famous to have an impact.  Every single person who is inspired to make a differenc can do that.

Fatherhood Graduate Takes Parenting Seriously

Pat and Ms. Jackie

Pat heard about the Fatherhood Program at Community Action Northwest Alabama from a Colbert County Community Correction Officer. Pat had admittedly been involved in selling drugs with the street life being all he has ever known.  When he heard about the Fatherhood Program and all of the opportunities it offered to any parent willing to put the effort into changing his or her life, Pat knew this was his chance.  He was tired of not being legitimately employed with a stable income, having no marketable skills, no direction for his future and most importantly not being a good role model for his kids.
Pat started the Fatherhood Program attending classes each week.  He learned more about parenting, his responsibilites and even how his relationships affect his parenting abilities including the role model he wished to be.  Pat didn't stop here but took advantage of the on-site GED and Work Keys classes Community Action offers through a partnership with Northwest Shoals Community College.  After a long list of accomplishments Pat obtained his Ready to Work, OSHA, ADIT Work Keys and Forklift Certifications.  Pat is, rightfully so, proud of his accomplishments...so are we!  Congratulations Pat!
