Parenting Impacts

Taft Harden Baker

Nicklaus Harden never dreamed that a five-minute conversation about the Northwest Alabama Responsible Parenting Program would change his life.  A court discussion regarding child support led to a later conversation with Jackie Baker, Coordinator for the Responsible Parenting Program.  Harden, who dropped out of high school, just needed some encouragement.  Baker sat down and talked with Harden seeing the potential.  "All I needed was an ounce of willingness from him, and I got it. I opened the door and he did the rest."

Harden started the Parenting class completing the 30 hours of class time.  Harden said "I felt I was a good dad, but through the class, I saw some things that I could improve on."  He also got his high school diploma using the newly enacted Alabama high school diploma option (HSO).  Through a partnership with Northwest Shoals Community College, Community Action has been able to offer on-site GED, HSO and Work Keys classes.  Mary Beth Taft, GED instructor was instrumental in Nick's success in obtaining his HSO.

Harden was also encouraged to get his Certified Drivers License (CDL) obtaining this in July and being hired immediately by a local trucking company 2-days later.
Nick credits Baker and Taft for their efforts in helping him see the benefits to the Parenting Program, gaining his high school diploma and his CDL.

"I needed a push and they gave it to me," Harden said of Baker and the other staff in the Program. "I'm blessed that Jackie was sitting in that courtroom that day  and decided to talk to me about the Parenting Program. It's a conversation I will never forget."
